Beneath the ship’s engine | radio piece (9min48), combining field recordings, synthesizers and spoken words

“resonant affects and memories from moment of relational listening“

Work description:

On the ferry to Brodick, I remembered a friend of mine saying that listening to the sound of a ship’s engine is a soothing experience, as it reminds her of the time she spent with her grandpa on a holiday cruise. Stemming from that hum, I imagined a collage with my recordings from Arran, a marine forecast report and a collection of words gathered from online forums and voiced by myself. Something seems to appear from that juxtaposition, a land whose cartography is defined by somnolent coordinates.

May  2025, Beneath the ship’s engine was broadcast on Field trip, a radio show run by artist Louary at Radio Buena Vida in Glasgow (UK). This episode of the show is outcome of a field recording group session led by Sound Thought collective in Arran, in which the artist took part in April 2025.
